Hello there! Figrou, I am — your guide, hmm. Figbase, a reference site it is, where which sets the LEGO minifigures come in, and how to tell the variants apart, across the board mapped out they are. Wherever your curiosity leads, begin there you should.

This guide lays out how to tell apart every LEGO Jar Jar Binks variant, along with the main sets each one appears in, all in a single reference table.

The short version: there are two Jar Jar Binks minifigures. The original from 1999 (sw0017, with an unprinted head) and the 2011 redesign (sw0301, with a printed head plus a printed vest). You’ll find them across eight sets from 1999 to 2015, plus one magnet set, and nothing new has shown up since the 2015 #75080 AAT.

Who Is Jar Jar Binks?

Jar Jar Binks is a member of the amphibious Gungan species from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. A native of the planet Naboo, he’s known for his clumsy personality and distinctive way of speaking. He fights alongside Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the liberation of Naboo, and later appears in Episode II: Attack of the Clones as a senator of the Galactic Republic.

Jar Jar Binks Has Multiple Minifigures: Variant List

The Rebrickable database lists two Jar Jar Binks minifigure variants. The two BrickLink identifiers are sw0017 (1999 version) and sw0301 (2011 version).

Variant Name (Common)BrickLink IDHow to IdentifyFirst SetFirst YearRarity
1999 original (unprinted head)sw0017Tan torso (no chest print) / plain (unprinted) tan head / dark gray legs / one of the first dedicated sculpted heads alongside C-3PO#7121 Naboo Swamp and others1999Medium to high
2011 redesign (printed head)sw0301Dark tan torso (printed vest plus gray shirt) / newly sculpted head with face printing / dark gray legs#7929 The Battle of Naboo2011Medium

How to Tell sw0017 and sw0301 Apart

The easiest tell is whether the head is printed. The 1999 sw0017 has a plain, unprinted tan head, and at the time it debuted as one of the earliest minifigures with a dedicated sculpted head, alongside C-3PO. The 2011 sw0301 redesign uses a newly sculpted head with the eyes, mouth, and facial details all printed in.

The torso printing differs too: sw0017 is nearly blank, while sw0301 has a dark tan vest and gray shirt printed on. Put them side by side and you can tell at a glance. The legs are dark gray on both.

A set number that catches your eye, if there is — just search that number on BrickLink or Brickset, you should, and detailed listings you’ll find. The older set names, in English kept they are, because sparse the official LEGO listings for them are. As confirmed the sources get, keep updating these Figrou will, mmm.

Debut, Newest, Rarest, Cheapest: If You Want a Jar Jar Binks Minifigure

Debut Set

Jar Jar Binks (sw0017) was first made into a minifigure in 1999, appearing simultaneously in three sets: #7121 Naboo Swamp, #7161 Gungan Sub, and #7171 Mos Espa Podrace. That was the lineup from the launch year of the LEGO Star Wars series.

Newest Set

The 2015 #75080 AAT is the final set to include sw0301. Since then, no new variant or new set has been confirmed, so there hasn’t been a new release in roughly a decade.

Rarest (Hardest to Find)

The older sets with sw0017 from 1999 to 2000, especially #7159 Star Wars Podracing Bucket (a limited bucket release) and #7171 Mos Espa Podrace (a large 907-piece set), have been retired for a long time and are among the harder ones to find even on the secondhand market.

Cheapest (Easiest to Find)

Relatively easier to find are #7115 Gungan Patrol (2000, a small 79-piece set) and #853414 Star Wars Magnet Set (2012, a Gear-line magnet item). That said, both are retired, so today you’ll mostly be looking on the secondhand market.
